Tips to Maintain a Healthy Mouth While Traveling

Here we are, right in the middle of summer which also means we're right in the middle of summer vacations. Whether your summer vacation plans include a fancy trip overseas or on a cruise, a camping trip, or a simple weekend getaway an hour away, the one thing you don't want to take a vacation from is maintaining that beautiful, healthy smile of yours.  Here are a few tips to pack away for your upcoming vacation, whether in your head or in your suitcase.

  1. Pack With Care. I don't know about you, but when I travel everything I pack is thought out, from my dinner outfits and jewelry right down to my toothbrush. Your toothbrush can pick up a lot of dirt and germs while traveling so make sure it's well protected. Pack it in a small plastic zipper pouch (the pouches you receive from Charmoy Dental are perfect for traveling!) along with everything else you'll need to keep your teeth healthy like mouth wash, toothpaste, and floss.

  2. Pack Healthy Snacks. Whether you're traveling by airplane, by car, or by train, let's be honest – one of the most appealing part of the travel day itself is the snacks you treat yourself because you're officially on vacation and heck, you deserve it. It's like a rite of passage, leaving your driveway and opening that first bag of chips. Remember though, you will soon be at your final destination and there are plenty of times during the week that you'll have to “treat yourself” – don't let day 1 in the car or airport set the mood for the entire trip. Think ahead and pack cut up fruit and veggies such as apples, strawberries, pineapple, carrots, celery sticks, etc. to munch on. These healthier snacks will still satisfy your need to “crunch” and snack, while keeping your mouth healthy and clean. It's a win-win!

  3. Maintain Your Routine. Sure, you're in a new and different place, you're more relaxed, and you're on vacation. If nothing else though, the one thing you shouldn't be relaxed about is your oral health. It can be easy to forget about routines and basics when you're away. This trip make sure you make your family's oral health a priority. Brush twice a day and floss once a day. You and your family might be on vacation – but for your teeth, there's no such thing.

  4. Drink Plenty of Water. No matter what else you do while you're away on vacation, how many “cheat” meals you have, how many glasses of wine or soda or beer you take in, remember to combat that with plenty of water. Not only will it keep you well hydrated and assist in your overall health, but it will also help to wash away bad bacteria from your mouth and keep your teeth and gums healthy and strong.

Believe me, we here at Charmoy Dental enjoy our vacations just as much as the next person.  You deserve your time away, a much needed break from the day in and day out hustle and bustle of life.  We just want to make sure that you're not giving your teeth and mouth the same break.  If you want to schedule an appointment before you jet off or make one for when you return, give our office a call at 973-584-0008.  Until then, happy traveling!
