Finding the right dentist for you and your family can be just as exhausting as trying to find that perfect sweater on sale for 50% off in your size during Black Friday. Add in the fact that a lot of people get anxiety just hearing the word ‘dentist’, and it’s a recipe for disaster. I’ve compiled a list of the top 7 tips to help you find the right dentist for you:

1. Does the practice offer new patient specials or do anything to show appreciation to current patients?

Many offices will offer discounts on the first exam and x-rays for new patients. Many practices will also offer a referral incentive program, raffles, etc., for existing patients. Call the office and see what types of incentives they offer.

2. Which insurances do they accept?
This is always an important question to ask. Not all practices participate with insurance. It is always in your best interest to find an office that participates with your insurance, this will maximize your benefits and minimize your out of pocket.

3. What payment options (if any) are available for self-pay patients?

Talking about money is one of the most uncomfortable conversations in life, whether it’s with a significant other, your parents, your children, and even your business relationships, such as your dental office. But it’s better for you in the long run to know where you stand before services start. Some practices may offer payment plans, Care Credit, or even a pre-paid membership for services throughout the year (such as Charmoy Dental’s Care to Smile Program). It’s important to know where you stand.

4. Where are you located? What are the office hours?
I don’t have to tell you that in this day and age it sometimes feels as if we’re on a rollercoaster and it’s hard to stop or fit “one more thing” into our busy schedules. Pick an office that is not only convenient in location to you, but also convenient in their office hours. Do you work full time? Choose an office that offers night time or Saturday appointments. Are you a stay-at-home-mom whose only free time is during the hours of 9am-2pm while the children are at school? Choose an office who can accommodate you.

5. What happens in the event of a dental emergency?
In a perfect world we would all go on through life with perfect dental health, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Find out what the protocol is if an emergency comes up. How soon can the office fit you in during office hours? What happens if you experience an emergency after hours? Is there a 24-hour on call dentist?

6. Look around the office and take in the atmosphere.
What is your initial impression when you see the office? Is it neat and orderly? Rushed and chaotic? Is the staff welcoming, friendly, and helpful? This is important to take into consideration too because you want to feel comfortable in your surroundings.

7. Were estimated costs provided to you before treatment?
In any situation in life, we need to know where we stand, especially when it involves our hard-earned cash. Did the office provide you with a treatment plan including the breakdowns of what insurance is covering and what your responsibility is?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, go on tours, and interview the prospective dental office you have in mind. It’s important that you and your family feel welcomed, comfortable, and taken care of. This may seem like a daunting task in front of you, but it doesn’t have to be. If you are looking for a new dentist, we invite you to call our office: Charmoy Dental Associates at (973)584-0008 to set up an appointment.
